Its seclusion, natural charm, and easy river access are the first things to come to mind. Here’s more reasons why you’ll love it:

Things To Do At Rum Island Springs
There are plenty of things to do within the springs, but these might just be the best:
1. Swim in the Refreshing Spring
The main highlight of Rum Island Springs is its crystal-clear swimming hole. It stays at a constant 72℉ year-round, meaning you can swim in refreshing, but not too cold, waters at any point. The swimming area is around 200 meters across, and is so clear that you can see straight to the bottom–perfect for snorkeling. Additionally, the park has plenty of easy access points, from an aluminum ramp to stairs.
Pro Tip: You’ll want to bring water shoes because sometimes the spring’s bottom can be rocky.
2. Kayak or Canoe Along the Santa Fe River
Up for a quick paddle? Rum Island Springs is a great spot to launch kayaks and canoes. With the Santa Fe River located right near multiple springs, it makes it the perfect place to go kayaking in Florida.
Some nearby springs to paddle in include:
- Poe Springs–About 1.5 miles downstream
- Ginnie Springs–Around 4 miles upstream
- Blue Springs–A short paddle away
Don’t have your own gear? Not a problem! The following local places offer kayak rentals and other services that will make your adventure complete.
- Get Up and Go Kayaking: Located inside Rum Island Park, and great for beginners. They will provide everything you need to get started.
- Rum 138: Great for tourists! They have excellent customer service and local knowledge. There is even a store where you can pick up a souvenir.
- Anderson’s Outdoor Adventure:

3. Enjoy a Picnic in the Park
After you dry yourself off, enjoy a picnic under a shady oak or cypress tree. The springs have picnic tables and BBQ pits, making it a great spot for your next family outing or for a peaceful lunch with a view. In order to have the best picnic, make sure you bring the following:
- A picnic blanket or some foldable chairs to sit on.
- Either a packed lunch or some BBQ supplies to grill up some hot dogs or hamburgers.
- Plenty of drinking water, as Florida weather tends to be hot and humid.
- Bug spray, because those mosquitoes will get to you, especially in the summer!
4. Spot Local Wildlife
Florida has a variety of wildlife, and Rum Island Springs is no exception to that. If you are a fan of birdwatching and photography, this is a fantastic place to be. You might see some barred owls, ospreys, great blue herons, or ibis along your journey. Additionally, freshwater turtles are notorious for walking along the springs. Don’t forget to look in the clear water for fish! Even a lazy alligator could be floating nearby, although they tend to avoid heavily trafficked areas.
Pro Tip:
Stop by early in the morning for the best wildlife spotting opportunities.
